Seed Grant Program
The University of Georgia Research Foundation has established a seed grant program in infectious disease research to support pilot studies towards major extramural funding in this area.

Deadline
Application deadlines: January 10 and June 10; in most cases funding decisions will be made within 30 days of each deadline.
Eligibility
- Eligibility is restricted to Full Members of the Faculty of Infectious Diseases at the University of Georgia, although Associate Members may partner with Full members to apply for seed grant funding.
- Participants agree to provide semi-annually by May 1 and November 1 the following tracking parameters:
- Abstracts submitted / presented (title, author, conference, location, dates)
- Manuscripts submitted / published (full citations)
- Grant proposals submitted / funded originating from seed grant support
- Discovery disclosures / patent applications originating from seed grant support
- Graduate students and post-doctoral trainees supported through seed grant projects (support includes stipend and / or supplies)
- Applications that include matching support (e.g., by direct match, Veterinary Medical Experiment Station funding, or graduate assistantships) and multi-investigator collaborations are particularly encouraged.
Scope
- Projects should address one or more of the following focus areas:
- Molecular Pathogenesis
- Host-Pathogen Interaction
- New Methods for Detection / Diagnosis
- New Strategies for Treatment / Prevention
- Disease Ecology
- Epidemiology
- Unfunded proposals may be revised / resubmitted once; some unfunded proposals may be held by the review committee for consideration in the next cycle.
- Support can be requested for up to two years, with second-year funding contingent on the progress shown in year one.
- Anticipated funding range: $5,000-$30,000.
Criteria
- Significance to understanding and control of infectious diseases.
- A well developed and clearly articulated plan to leverage seed grant funding for extramural support and / or commercialization potential.
Acknowledgements
All publications and presentations derived from work supported by seed grant awards must acknowledge the University of Georgia Faculty of Infectious Diseases Seed Grant program.
Submission
Letter of Intent
You must submit by email (dkrause@uga.edu) a brief Letter of Intent no later than one week before the proposal due date. The letter should include the project title, the names of the PI and co-investigators, a very brief paragraph summarizing the proposed studies, and the amount of funding you will request. Keep it simple – this is simply to expedite the review process.
